Works ︎Signs

(1990-2002)

Billboards and Signs function as sites of communication. Through text, images and universal symbols, they present public information. Interestingly, one of the functions of large sign hordings is to mask and conceal. By turning ones camera to the spaces to the backs of these signs one can reveal marginalised social spaces and disclose details of that have been hidden from attention

By photographing the backs of signs and the remnants of signs, they become something other than signs. They become symbolic signs and collectively speak about the differing layers of the social, cultural, historical and commercial landscape they inhabit. Equally they are enigmatic and real material objects, containing their unique material qualities, of form, shape, surface and texture. They become non signs, blank signs for the viewer to contemplate.
