The brick becomes a condensed means to picture the impact of the industrial revolution on the British landscape. The names that are manufactured into the bricks and fragments of brick texts, give these materials character and identity and evoke landscape, nature, history, industry and culture. Collectively they form a poem that evokes place, landscape, memory and 300 years of British social history. Cornerstone was initiated in the early 1990’s and has evolved accordingly, from photographs, to installations and sculpture, audio visual, artist books, to ceramic transfers on brick and 3d prints. Sections of this body of work have been exhibited at the Reims Photography Festival, France and the inaugural Superstructure, exhibition, Centre of Visual Arts, Cardiff, Wales in 1999 and at the In the book ‘Patterns in Comparative Religion’, the author Mircea Eliade, argues that spiritual experience must be described and understood on its own terms. This is an archive of kitsch imagery and popular song, democratic and inclusive of all musical styles. &nbsp; These packaged artifacts are cultural relics, archaeological markers of cultural history. Iorwerth Peate founder of St Fagans would approve of their redefined status as vernacular folk art. They are preserved time capsules, unselfconscious folk art that reveal an era of yearning to express cultural identity and to celebrate Welshness. Nostalgia, the naïve, innocence, the idiosyncratic, passion and celebration of amateur values are all here. The records are full of living history with personal and group biography, stories, dreams, hopes and anxieties. They become triggers for memory and emotion. This grouping becomes an historical archive delineating a cultural period between Jac a Will (circa 1958) until the late 70’s. The musical themes and lyrics express the cultural values of the nation. A cultural shift takes place from conformist values; the nostalgic and sentimental - celebration of nation, land, family, community and bible, to a bold and confident political, individualistic, self expressive and psychedelic themes as sung by Huw Jones, Dafydd Iwan, Heather Jones, Tebot Piws and Meic Stevens. Music in Wales as evidenced here is expansive in style, form and expression. It is a plural and multicultural activity with Paul Robeson, Iris Williams and Shirley Bassey contributing to the Welsh musical tradition. This defines modernism in a specific cultural and marginal context. Telepops Y Cymro is about Wales becoming modern and expressive. Through text, images and universal symbols, they present public information. Interestingly, one of the functions of large sign hordings is to mask and conceal. By turning ones camera to the spaces to the backs of these signs one can reveal marginalised social spaces and disclose details of that have been hidden from attention By photographing the backs of signs and the remnants of signs, they become something other than signs. They become symbolic signs and collectively speak about the differing layers of the social, cultural, historical and commercial landscape they inhabit. As a starting point we gathered around ideas of Thomas’ wartime propaganda scripts for the Ministry of Public Information. These related to the building of a post war consensus of equality within affordable housing, work, health, welfare and nationalized industrial and public utilities. Communal values that have been eroded over a 35 year period and accelerated as a political and financial land grab since the banking crisis of 2008. To bring these current and pressing issues to the fore we created a public and communal forum where the arts become visible cultural barricade in the form of a series of Public Information Nights. Public Information Nightsare collaborative events, rallying calls for shared cultural values of generosity, commonality and to the joy of creative participation. Craig Wood) https://peterfinnemore.com/Silent-Village-content Wed, 21 Aug 2019 15:50:30 +0000 Peter Finnemore https://peterfinnemore.com/Silent-Village-content (2009-2010) In 2009 I was commissioned to create a new body or artwork by Ffotogallery, National Development Agency for Photography responding to Humphrey Jennings’ film The Silent Village (1943). A Ministry of Information docu-drama which relocates in the South Wales village of Cwmgiedd the obliteration of the Czech village Lidice and the murder of its citizens. This was a reprisal for the assassination of the high ranking Nazi official Reinhard Heydrich, Reichsprotektorof Bohemia &amp; Moravia. The resulting work of large scale b&amp;w images and film is entitled Everday and seeks to connect with Jennings’ film and its narrative through photographing the space, contents and atmosphere of my family home. Which is located in a similar coal mining community as those of Cwngiedd and Lidice.
